The
fair trade movement started in response to the
fact that in recent years people in the
developing countries have actually been getting
poorer, not richer and current international
trading structures are helping to keep them that
way.
Fair
Trade offers an alternative model, which offers
workers and producers in the developing
countries a better deal. This means a fair price
for their goods, decent working conditions, long
term contracts that provide security and minimum
health, safety and environmental standards.
Fair
Trade alone however, cannot address all the
problems created by the current system. This can
only be achieved by changing the unfair rules of
world trade, so that in the future they work for
everyone, not just the rich nations and
multinational companies. In the meantime, for
millions of people Fair Trade means the
difference between a hand-to-mouth existence and
being able to plan for the future.
In the
past decade the Fair Trade movement has really
taken off, as consumer awareness of the
treatment of workers and producers in poor
countries has increased. As consumers, we wield
enormous power through the choices we make when
we go shopping. So by making the choice to buy
fair trade products, you directly help the poor
of the world and send a message to governments
and business that change is needed.
In the
next few years the World Trade Organisation will
make decisions that will have a huge impact on
the lives of millions of people around the
world, for better or for worse. Public pressure
is vital to ensure that a fairer set of rules is
agreed that will make trade work and your
decisions as a consumer can help bring this
about.
